UNC School of Medicine laboratory building damaged in fire

The UNC School of Medicine's Marsico Hall was badly damaged Wednesday in a fire.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The UNC School of Medicine’s Marsico Hall was badly damaged Wednesday in a fire.

According to the town of Chapel Hill, the fire was reported before 11 p.m. at the multi-story laboratory building at 125 Mason Farm Road.

Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire that the sprinkler system could not reach. There was extensive smoke and water damage to multiple floors of the building.

Crews were at the scene until 4:45 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters from Carrboro, North Chatham and Durham fire departments all responded.
