Chapel Hill, N.C. — Campus police at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are investigating an assault reported Thursday morning at a building on campus.
Investigators said in an email to students and staff that a female student said an unidentified man following her as she entered Carroll Hall shortly after 8:15 a.m. "forcefully slapped" her on the buttocks and then ran off.
The student told police that she first noticed the man as she was walking from the intersection of Cameron Avenue and South Columbia Street toward the building, which houses the university's School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Police said the man was last seen headed north toward South Road and was described as a thin man in his early 20s, black with a medium complexion and shoulder-length dreadlocks. He was wearing long dark basketball shorts, a dark short-sleeved T-shirt and a black, red and white baseball cap with a royal blue skull cap underneath. He also had a royal blue two-string backpack and might have been using neon-colored ear-buds.
Anyone with information about the man or the incident is asked to call the UNC Department of Public Safety at 919-843-6165 or Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.
