CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Nearly a week after a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student criticized the school for the handling of a rape case, school leaders met Tuesday to discuss safety.

The focus of the regularly scheduled meeting was on how to prevent and respond to sexual violence within the UNC system.

Leaders said one of the biggest issues is inconsistent policies across the 17 campuses.

"Safety on a college campus is important everywhere these days," said Paul Cousins with North Carolina State University. "It's important because we serve the people of the state of North Carolina, and we especially serve the youth."

Leaders said they hope to continue to find ways to have a more unified policy with clear definitions.

UNC System President Margaret Spellings will ultimately decide which policies will go into effect.
