CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina Board of Governors will meet in special session on Tuesday to discuss the implications of House Bill 2 one day after the federal government sued to block the state from enforcing the law.
On Monday, Gov. Pat McCrory announced his own lawsuit against the federal government accusing the Obama administration of overstepping its authority when it gave North Carolina a deadline to say whether or not it would enforce the law, which dictates what bathrooms transgender people can use.

Hours after McCrory's announcement, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch called HB2 "state-sponsored discrimination" in announcing the Justice Department's lawsuit against McCrory, the state and the UNC system.

If federal courts do find House Bill 2 to be discriminatory, Lynch and her deputies could ask for federal funding to be withheld from the state. Billions of dollars flow from the federal government for education, law enforcement and other needs.

The UNC system received $1.4 billion in federal funds last year, which could be at risk if a federal judge decides the state is not in compliance with federal law.

The special session will begin a 4:30 p.m. via teleconference, according to the meeting agenda.
