U.S. Highway 70 in Selma reopens
U.S. Highway 70 in Selma closed in both directions for more than four hours Wednesday near Buffalo Road and West Oak Street when a propane truck overturned.
Posted — UpdatedThe driver took a turn too quickly and the truck overturned just after 6 p.m., Selma Fire Chief Phillip McDaniel said.
The truck's tanker was carrying around 9,000 gallons of propane. A small amount leaked from the truck at a valve.
As a precaution, nearly a 3-mile stretch of the highway was shutdown and railroad traffic was also halted in the area.
"The truck is laying 20 feet from the tracks," McDaniel explained of why the railroad was affected.
Waccamaw Transport, the owners of the truck, transferred the propane into another tanker and the road reopened at about 10:15 p.m.
The truck driver wasn't injured.
"This is very unfortunate, but when a man can walk away and go to his family, that is the most important thing to us,” said Danny Page, vice president of Waccamaw Transport.
The truck driver’s name was not released. It was not known yet whether he will face charges.
