BAILEY, N.C. — Westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 264 were closed in Nash County at Stone Heritage Road Tuesday afternoon and a detour was posted.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation estimated that the closure would last through the evening. Drivers were being forced to exit at U.S. Highway 581 South, take right onto U.S. 264 Alternate West and follow to N.C. Highway 231 North to return to 264.

Firefighters and law enforcement officers were searching the trees along the roadway where a tractor-trailer had flipped onto its side in the trees and caught on fire, sending a plume of black smoke into the air.
