Mother, daughter killed in Apex shooting

The Wake County Sheriff's Office said the bodies of two Apex women were found at a home on Humie Olive Road.

APEX, N.C. — Deputies found the bodies of a mother and daughter Saturday morning while conducting a welfare check at a home on Humie Olive Road.

Melissa Mitchell McLain, 44, and her daughter, Ashley Nicole Fite, 17, who both lived at the home at 7628 Humie Olive Road, were identified as the victims. Both died from apparent gunshot wounds.

Authorities said they received a phone call around 12:45 a.m. from a "concerned person," asking to check inside the home. Deputies found McLain and Fite at about 1 a.m., officials said.

Lemuel Gabriel Miller, 47, of the same address, was suspected in the shooting, according to the sheriff's office. Miller was found dead around 8 a.m. Saturday in the 1400 block of Cooper Store Road in Harnett County. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot, according to a news release.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
