CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A wrong-way driver caused a two-vehicle wreck early Friday on Interstate 40 West between U.S. Highway 15-501 and N.C. Highway 86.

According to state Highway Patrol troopers, a Honda Civic was traveling east in the westbound lanes at about 4:30 a.m. when it hit a pickup truck head on.

"People are swerving and going everywhere," one caller told emergency dispatchers. "It's just ridiculous."

The woman driving the Honda and the man driving the truck were both taken to local hospitals. Their names and conditions have not been released. No other people were inside the cars.

The wreck briefly closed both westbound lanes of I-40 West. The lanes reopened at about 6:20 a.m.
