Two teens killed in single-car wreck

Posted July 10, 2012

— Two teenagers were killed Monday night when the car they were riding in went off the road and struck a tree south of Fairmont, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Authorities confirmed that a Ford Thunderbird was headed east on NC 41 when it went off the right side of the road, spun and made impact with a tree, killing Tyreke Addison and Nokolma Hunt, both 18.

Addison and Hunt were both recent graduates of Fairmont High School and both played on the football team.

The driver, DyMaggio Gilchrist, 18, was also a recent Fairmont graduate and former football player. His condition was not released.

Authorities say that neither speed nor alcohol were a factor in the single-car accident.

Two other passengers in the vehicle were injured. They were identified as Devont’e Govan, 17, and Darius McCallum, 18.

Cars don't run off the road for no reason. Possibly texting, talking on a cell phone or simple distraction from too many people in the car could be the cause. Regardless of the reason, quite a tragic situation that most likely could have been avoided by a strict, enforced limit on passengers until the driver has several more years experience. One teenager tends to be reckless, two can be foolhardy, three is tantamount to a suicide mission.

Awe .. Sounds like a bad anding to what was supposed to be a group of young teens having the time of their lives. Hope things turn around for these young people. Very sad news.

Depending on the year of the Thunderbird, it like is not tiny.

    Watermelon, all Thunderbirds aren't tiny!

Fun, maybe heading "east" is what caused the accident on that North-South route.

Five people in a little tiny Thunderbird? I'm thinking distracted driver? Still sad for the family....terrible loss.

So sad for young lives cut short, and for their grieving families. This seems to be happening so much every few days to weeks, just happened in a fiery crash not far from where we live. So many distractions, and feelings of invincibility.
