— Police on Tuesday released descriptions of two men wanted in connection with an assault and robbery of a man Saturday afternoon on Durham's American Tobacco Trail.

The man told police he was walking between the South Street and Lawson Street entrances around 12:30 p.m. when two black men wearing red T-shirts and shorts approached him, hit him with a stick and fled with $13.

One of the men was between 18 and 20 years old and stood 5 feet 8 inches tall. The other was between 20 and 25 years old, had a dark complexion, a slim face and dreadlocks.

It's a funny thing: there are LOTS of people "that look helpless and weak" out on the trail every day, and almost none of them get attacked.

Rare events are rare events, no matter how much attention local media lavish upon them. Keep patroling the trail, be aware of your surroundings, be prepared to defend yourself -- but don't cower indoors because there's a chance in a thousand that something bad might happen to you. Your couch and TV pose more danger to your well-being than do a few underachieving criminals.

....... okay I know this is going to be a very hard concept for some to grasp..... HOW ABOUT PUTTING SOME UNDER COVER COPS OUT THERE THAT LOOK HELPLESS AND WEAK???? you may then find them...

The problem isn't the Tobacco Trail itself but rather that it's in Durham.

I looked at the rules on the rails to trails web site for ATT and I see no weapons prohibition. No alcohol, scoop after your dogs and lots of rules about right of way for horses, bikes, etc, but nothing about weapons.

Too bad concealed carry is prohibited on the trail, maybe next time the goons wouldn't have walked away with $13 for their stupidity. Another "gun-free" zone targeted by criminals, who would have thought it.

maybe some people who carry need to walk this trail on a daily basis a couple of criminals getting shot might slow this stuff down

One of these days these goons are going to attack the wrong person on the trail, and they're going to be very well ventilated for it.

So sick of these no-good criminals ruining a great outdoor venue for families/walkers/runners. Just pathetic.
