Motive unclear for Craven County shooting
An 82-year-old man fired the shots that injured two tree trimmers Tuesday evening near Vanceboro and a neighbor who came out to investigate the noise, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedCraven County sheriff's deputies shot suspect John Jenkins, and he, along with his three alleged victims, was taken to an area hospital.
Representatives of Duke Energy Progress told WNCT that two of the victims worked for contractor Townsend Trees and were clearing branches around power lines at the time of the shooting.
It was unclear Wednesday why Jenkins allegedly opened fire.
The Craven County district attorney filed assault charges against Jenkins, and more charges may follow.
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate, which is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
