— Two men are dead after a late Saturday car accident on Grantham School Road near Sutton Town Road, the state highway patrol said.

Andrew Vernon Britt, 18, and Franklin Purvis II, 18, both of Mt. Olive, died in the accident that occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m.

A 1999 Mercury traveling northbound on Grantham School Road crossed left of center, hitting a Progress Energy bucket truck, which was traveling southbound on Grantham School Road, head-on, Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Edwards said.

Britt was driving the Mercury and Purvis was the only passenger in the car. The driver of the Progress Energy truck suffered minor injuries.

The accident is under investigation.

Britta and Purvis had recently graduated Southern Wayne High School in Wayne County. Britt was planning to attend Campbell University in the fall, while Purvis had planned to attend Wayne Community College.

I watched these boys grow up, Andrew from birth. Andrew would hang around Carl and I when were at Carl's for hours at the time until had to go home. He is with Carl in heaven now and they are watching over all of us. It is tragic when someone so young and happy all the time leaves us. We remember the good times and laugh. My heart goes out to the family as we pray for you in this time of tragedy. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!

I grew up in the Grantham community and still have family there.I don't know these young men or their families but my heart goes out to them.I pray that God will help these families through this and I also pray for the driver of the Progress Energy truck. It is so very tragic when young people are killed. They are just starting life as adults and this happens.I hope other young people will hear about this story and remember not to drink and drive. This tragic accident may end up saving many of their friends lives.May God be with all involved.

These were classmates of my son who lost his life on 12/24/06 at the age of 16. My heart goes out to the parents of these young men knowing what that are facing. They will be in my thoughts and prayers along with the driver of the Progress Energy Truck.

This is so sad. I was at SSWH for a short time and remember these guys. They were good kids.. with so much life to live! I pray for these family members that will suffer their loss. They had so much life left to live, but God had a plan for them.
