DURHAM, N.C. — Durham authorities are investigating a shooting that injured a mother and her 9-year-old son early Saturday evening.

Police were called around 6 p.m. to Lucas Drive in response to a shooting but found the 31-year-old woman and the boy sitting in a vehicle on Halyard Court about a half-mile away.

Both were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, police said.

It was unclear whether the shooting happened at a home or in the street, but a man who identified himself only as a close family friend, said the two were shot inside a car at a home on Lucas Drive and that the woman then drove to Halyard Court.

Several residents who live on Lucas Drive said they heard at least six gunshots.

Police, however, would not comment further on the investigation, including a possible motive, and they had no suspects as of Sunday evening.

The victims' names have not been released

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 919-683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
