— Two men were killed Saturday morning in a shooting outside a Laurinburg convenience store where three homicides have taken place in the last four months, police said.

Police said Derek Bethea and William McKoy were leaving the Brothers in the Hood market, at the corner of Aberdeen and Main streets, around 10:45 a.m. when a man opened fire on them with an assault rifle.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Bethea's father, Tony Smith, described the moment he knew his son had died.

"I saw my son laying on the ground and everything, man. I just lost it for a minute or two," Smith said. "Other than that, I don't know what happened myself. I know my son is dead." Father recalls seeing slain son Father recalls seeing slain son

Police said a person of interest turned himself in and is still in custody, but no charges have been filed. His name was not released.

The relationship between the person of interest and the victims was not disclosed.
