DURHAM, N.C. — Two people died Friday from injuries suffered in a Thursday night house fire, authorities said.

The victims were identified as Catherine Turner, 78, and her son, Larry Laws, 58.

Neighbors told investigators they heard a loud explosion around the time of the fire at 6406 Russell Road, Durham County Assistant Fire Marshal James Thomas said. Investigators haven't determined if the explosion was related to the fire, he said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Family members said they believe Turner might have turned on the gas and the pilot light didn't come on and that Laws tried to light a cigarette, not realizing there was gas in the house.
