Two injured in Henderson explosion

Posted November 7, 2011

— Two people were injured Monday afternoon when a welding torch ignited methane gas at a call center, causing an explosion, authorities said.

The explosion was reported at 145 Technology Lane in the Triangle North Corporate Park. The address is listed as the site of ACS State Healthcare, which handles calls for medical records.

A solar panel is being installed at the back of the building, and a member of the construction crew was welding copper pipe when the explosion occurred, said Brandon Link, assistant chief of the Watkins Volunteer Fire Department.

The worker was knocked about 20 feet by the explosion, Link said. He was taken to Maria Parham Medical Center with minor injuries.

A second worker was injured but didn't need to be taken to the hospital, Link said.

The explosion didn't cause a fire and any structural damage to the building, he said.

"You do not weld Copper Pipe, you solder it or braze it.

Yes, soft solder for water, silver solder for refrigerant.

methane (mĕth`ān), CH4, *colorless, odorless,* gaseous saturated hydrocarbon; the simplest alkane. It is less dense than air, melts at −184°C;, and boils at −161.4°C;. It is combustible and can form explosive mixtures with air. Methane occurs naturally as the principal component of natural gas
; it is formed by the decomposition of plant and animal matter. When this decomposition occurs underwater in swamps and marshes, marsh gas is released. The firedamp of coal mines is chiefly methane. In the atmosphere methane is a greenhouse gas, helping to trap infrared radiation and warm the earth (see also global warming)

Does, "colorless, odorless" have any meaning to you? Have you ever heard the term, "Stuff happens?" Why must you assume the workers didn't know what they were doing? Do you know what they say about those who assume? Sadly the puritanical word police won't allow me to tell you

the whole building was evacuated, a coworker was actually on the phone with one of the acs employees (as we are acs employees as well). the phone call was cut short because of the explosion. i'm glad everyone is "ok" minor injuries at least.

no one was blown twenty feet there was no welding .one person went to the hospital that was twenty feet from the explosion of methan from a sewer line .one had some bruises from plastic pipe hitting him when the pipe exploded .get the facts right an actually talk to the people were there.

This is incorrect information. There is no solar panel being added to the building. There is a solar panel company that will be moving into the vacant section of the building.

I'm glad that both only suffered minor injuries. I pray for a safe recovery for both people.
