— A Durham woman has been charged after authorities say she hit two people who were trying to help an injured dog Monday night on Liberty Street.

Margarita Hernandez De La Cruz, 54, is charged with driving while her license was revoked and not having insurance on her vehicle.

Investigators said Jonathan Parker, 47, and Stephanie Wilson, 29, both of Durham, were helping Parker's dog after it was hit at about 8 p.m. in the 1500 block of Liberty Street.

De La Cruz was driving west on Liberty Street when she hit Parker and Wilson, investigators said.

Wilson was taken to a local hospital for the treatment of critical injuries, and Parker was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The dog died as a result of its injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

This totally breaks my heart- two people were hit by an unlicensed and uninsured driver. How does she even have a car to drive, i thought you had to have proof of insurance before you can have a car. I am sure she is an illegal immigrant. Really, something needs to be done with those that are not legal.... Hoping Ms. Wilson and Mr. Parker have a speedy recovery. Thoughts and prayers are with them. If this is an illegal- deport her NOW!!!

    Here's hoping everyone heals up.

And hoping that some day there will be enough electronics in cars to prevent drivers who don't have license and insurance. If a car can drive itself nowadays , seems you could use fingerprint recognition a la iPhone to confirm you are in compliance. Yes, it could be defeated but whoever defeated it would have to be in compliance, etc. It would be nice to get unlicensed and uninsured off the road!
