Two from Lejeune killed in Afghanistan

Two Marines based at Camp Lejeune were killed while serving in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said.

NEW YORK — Two Marines based at Camp Lejeune were killed while serving in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.

Lance Cpl. Leopold Damas of Floral Park on Long Island died on Aug. 17. The 26-year-old was part of Operation Enduring Freedom and was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand province.

Damas was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Gunnery Sgt. Adam F. Benjamin, 34, of Garfield, Ohio, died Aug. 18 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to 8th Engineer Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force.
