DURHAM, N.C. — Club Boulevard Humanities Magnet Elementary School and Lakewood Montessori Middle School have earned the “Magnet School of Excellence” designation by Magnet Schools of America, Durham Public Schools announced Thursday. It is the highest award given by the organization.

“There were more than 300 applicants, and the standards for earning recognition were raised this year,” Durham Public Schools Interim Superintendent Hugh Osteen said in a statement. “Our magnet schools bring opportunity and innovation to students across Durham County, and we’re proud that two of them have been named national role models.”

Club Boulevard weaves the arts and an in-depth study of the humanities into all content areas, the district said. Lakewood Montessori focuses on community building and student leadership.

MSA’s Magnet Schools of Merit Award program recognizes magnet schools that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent and community involvement. Member schools submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators. DPS’s City of Medicine Academy earned the designation last year.
