Two charged with murder in infant's 2015 death

— A Lenoir County man and woman were charged on Thursday with murder after a 5-month-old found unconscious last year later died at the hospital.

Coty James Potter, 23, and Heather Nichol Brinkley, 22, both of Smiths Creekside Drive, in the Deep Run community were charged with murder and are being held without bond, according to the Kinston Department of Public Safety.

On April 7, 2015, Kinston authorities responded to 507 Darby Ave. and to Lenoir Memorial Hospital due to a report of an unconscious infant who was not breathing, the department said. The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Brinkley, the baby's mother, and Potter were arrested and initially charged with felony child abuse. After an investigation, the pair was charged on Thursday with murder.
