Two charged in shooting near Wilmington mall

Wilmington, N.C. — A woman and a man were arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of another woman in the parking lot of Wilmington's Independence Mall on Saturday.
According to authorities, Traneta Shanaia Campbell, 19, and Darius Nelson, 26, both of Wilmington were arrested about 8:15 p.m. Monday. Campbell and Nelson were found in a shed behind a home in the 2400 block of Monroe Street and were taken into custody without incident.
Campbell is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Catherine Ruth Ballard, 24. Nelson is charged with accessory after the fact, according to authorities.
Witnesses reported seeing Ballard talking with a man and woman in a burgundy vehicle just prior to the shooting. At least five shots were fired, according to police, and a child suffered a laceration to the head by glass from a windshield that was hit by a stray bullet.
A motive for the killing has not been released.
