Two charged in shooting at Edgecombe boat ramp

Edgecombe County authorities have arrested two people after a shooting at a boat ramp that injured one person Saturday afternoon.

PINETOPS, N.C. — Edgecombe County authorities have arrested two people after a shooting at a boat ramp that injured one person Saturday afternoon.

Sheriff James L. Knight said that 911 callers reported that people in two vehicles were exchanging gunfire in the area of the boat ramp in Old Sparta around 2:20 p.m.

Shortly after, a man with a gunshot wound was taken to Heritage Hospital, the sheriff said. A second person in the car wasn't injured.

Knight said the man, whose name wasn't released, was transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. He was in critical but stable condition.

Deputies arrested Ashton Trey Keel, 18 of 910 N.C. Highway 124 East in Macclesfield, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Joshua Caleb Davis, 20, of 3522 Roberson School Road in Tarboro, was charged with two counts of being an accessory after a felony.

Keel and Davis were both placed in the Edgecombe County jail under separate $255,000 unsecured bonds.

Davis has 2010 convictions for maintaining a place for a controlled substance and drug possession, according to state Department of Correction records. He served about six weeks in jail after his probation for those convictions was revoked.
