DUDLEY, N.C. — A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of a woman last week at her rural Wayne County home, authorities said.

Deputies responded to a report of shots fired last Thursday night at 3479 Arrington Bridge Road in Dudley and found Georgina Fajardo, 30, had been shot in the head. She was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she died.

Investigators said two men and a woman tried repeatedly to break into the home, and when that failed, they opened fire on the home, where Fajardo, a man and four children lived. No one else was hurt in the shooting, authorities said.

Maria Guadalupe Garcia, 20, of 146 Hunt Lane in Clinton, and Arnulfo Ascencio, 22, of 109 Plantation Drive in Warsaw, are charged with murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, attempted first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill. Both were being held without bond in the Wayne County jail.

Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce said the shooting remains under investigation and that more charges are possible.
