Two charged in connection with robbery, shooting in Wilson

A 25-year-old man and 22-year-old man were charged Saturday in connection with an attempted robbery and shooting on Vance Street Northeast, Wilson police said.

WILSON, N.C. — Wilson police arrested charged two men Saturday in connection with an attempted robbery and shooting, Wilson police said.

According to investigators, Darryl Jay Barnes III, 22, and Mario Antwan Purkett, 25, shot two men in the 700 block of Vance Street Northeast at about 12 a.m. Saturday.

Officers responding to a shooting call found Charles Artis and James Jones both suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where they were treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

About an hour later, officers responding to a call on Crawford Street discovered that Purkett had also been injured in the Vance Street shooting. He was also taken to Vidant Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Purkett, of 304-1 Lee St., is charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a weapon into occupied property inflicting serious injury and probation violation. He was in the Wilson County jail Sunday under a $135,000 secured bond.

Barnes, of 314 Daniel St., is charged with first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was in the Wilson County jail Sunday under a $50,000 secured bond.

Investigators did not release a possible motive for the shooting.
