Two charged after stolen car hits Durham patrol car

Authorities said that the chase began at about 5:30 p.m. after an officer attempted to stop a stolen Nissan Maxima on Dial Drive near Eastwood Drive. The driver of the Nissan drove down a dead-end road before turning around and ramming the patrol car, police said.

The chase continued onto several streets and ended when the driver of the Nissan crashed into a street sign near the intersection of University Drive and Vickers Avenue.

The driver, who was identified at Derran McClain, 36, jumped out of the vehicle and fled.

Stephanie Baine, 31, of Durham was a passenger in the Nissan. She was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Authorities said Thursday that Baine was pregnant.

Upon searching the stolen Nissan, officers said they confiscated oxycodone, methadone, drug paraphernalia, cash and phones.

Baine was charged with trafficking Schedule I opiates, possession of Schedule II control substances with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and conspiracy to sell Schedule II controlled substances.

McClain is not in custody and is wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement official, possession of Schedule II controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy to sell Schedule II controlled substances, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, injury to property, felony fleeing to elude a law enforcement officer and numerous traffic charges.
