CLAYTON, N.C. — A family was left homeless and two cats were killed in a Monday fire at a Clayton home.

The Clayton Fire Department said firemen responded to a home on Kildaire Court in the Richardson Place neighborhood off N.C. Highway 42 at about 6 p.m. after multiple neighbors called 911 to report a fire.

Authorities said the fire started at the back of the house near the roof and spread quickly throughout the home.

Responding crews were able to keep flames from spreading to nearby homes, but the heat from the fire damaged siding on at least one house next door, authorities said. Smoke carried by the wind was spotted across U.S. Highway 70 and in downtown Clayton, according to firefighters.

Firefighters said the family of three who lived in the house was not home at the time and the Red Cross was assisting them Monday night.

Two cats were killed in the fire, authorities said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
