Tweet from NC congressman cracks wise about Jimmy Carter, while former president is in hospice care

A now-deleted post marking Presidents' Day on U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson's Twitter account was criticized as tasteless. Hudson's office apologized and said staff scheduled the Tweet before news broke on Carter's health.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson's campaign Twitter account took a shot at former President Jimmy Carter Monday, sharing a famous quip about the well known humanitarian less than two days after Carter's family announced that he is dying.

The social media post quoted former President Ronald Reagan from his successful 1980 campaign against Carter: "Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his."

"Wise words to remember this #PresidentsDay," Hudson’s account added.

The tweet was quickly criticized as tasteless. On Saturday Carter's family had announced that, at 98 and in failing health, Carter would forgo further hospital treatment and spend his remaining time at home under hospice care.

A spokesman for Hudson said the post was “a staff-scheduled tweet prior to news of President Carter’s health” and that Hudson had it deleted when it came to his attention. “The campaign regrets the error,” the spokesman said in an email.

U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson Tweet, Feb. 20, 2023.

Carter is the longest-lived U.S. president in history. He served in the Navy, as governor of Georgia and one term as president, from 1977 to 1981. Much of his life since leaving office has focused on charity, diplomacy and boosting democracy around the world.

Among other things, Carter volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, working in person to build homes for people well into his 90s.
