Tutorial: Enrolling for health coverage through the online marketplace

— Enrolling for health insurance through the Affordable Car Act's online marketplace is a lengthy process.

An email address is required to set up an account on that will allow you to sign up for coverage. You should also have your Social Security number, W-2 and pay stubs handy to help complete the process.

Once on the website, click on "Apply Now," "Apply Online" and "Get Started" to begin the process. To set up an account, create a user name and password and answer some security questions. An email will then be sent to the address you supplied so you can verify the account.

You can then log in to your new account and enter your birth date and Social Security number and other personal information to verify your identity – one of several anti-fraud safeguards in the system.

On the exchange, people can view the range of plans offered in North Carolina and can compare costs, including co-pays and deductibles, and benefits, such as prescription drug coverage.
