Tuition increases approved for NC Central University

DURHAM, N.C. — A $1.03 million tuition increase for North Carolina Central University was approved Thursday by the school’s Board of Trustees.

The increase equates to $111 per year for undergraduate students and $165 for graduate students for 2013-14, in addition to a five-year tuition increase from the UNC Board of Governors of $100 for both undergraduate and graduate students, a spokeswoman for N.C. Central said. Since fiscal year 2000-01, N.C. Central has lost almost $60 million from permanent and temporary budget cuts. N.C. Central had a 14 percent budget cut over the last two fiscal years."Permanent budget cuts and reductions at this level are difficult for the university to absorb without seriously impacting direct instruction," Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Wendell Davis said in a statement.Money from the increase will go towards need-based financial aid and student retention through hiring additional faculty, advisers and tutors, the school said.
