RALEIGH, N.C. — Transportation Secretary Tony Tata abruptly resigned Tuesday, saying he wants to spend more time with his family and on his burgeoning career as an author of military-based thrillers.

Rumors of Tat's departure have swirled for months, but he has always dismissed them. In an interview Tuesday, he didn't rule out running for office in the future.

In the General Assembly, the Senate gave preliminary approval to a measure that would make "revenge porn," maliciously posting intimate photos of an ex-partner, a felony. Senators said they would look Wednesday at scaling it back to a misdemeanor for people under 18 before taking a final vote on the bill.

Meanwhile, a House committee defeated an effort to allow doctors to choose a lab for blood work and other tests after insurance companies balked at having to pay in-network prices for services from companies that might not be up to their standards.
