RALEIGH, N.C. — House budget writers have been working behind closed doors for about a week to craft their 2017-18 spending plan, and the first sections are expected to roll out in subcommittees late this week so floor votes could be held next week.

The work has meant a quiet week elsewhere in the Legislative Building.

On Tuesday, the House Finance Committee approved a bill that would allow nonprofits to hold casino night fundraisers and sell alcohol at the events. Social conservatives denounced the measure.

The House Judiciary II Committee passed a measure calling for longer prison sentences for people who commit violent crimes and post videos of the act online. The committee also narrowly approved legislation changing the rules asbestos victims must follow to collect damages in civil lawsuits.
