The Senate and House passed a continuing resolution Tuesday to keep state government running in July, guaranteeing that budget negotiations will stretch into the new fiscal year, which starts next Monday.

The ruling means North Carolina won't need to get federal approval of any changes to its voting laws, and legislators are looking at requiring photo identification to vote, reducing early voting times and eliminating same-day voter registration.
On Tuesday, a Senate committee approved a bill that would allow gas drilling companies to keep the chemicals they use secret unless the state sued them for information.
On the House side, a committee removed a provision that called for the creation of a separate state board to oversee charter schools, and a second committee approved legislation that would require instruction on risk factors for premature births.
