The House passed bills that would limit county and city home inspections, increase penalties for child abuse and provide training for teachers to use classroom technology.

Meanwhile, a group launched television ads featuring House Speaker Thom Tillis, which observers said would help raise his statewide profile in advance of the 2014 elections, when he is expected to run for U.S. Senate.

An environmental group also began airing radio ads criticizing two Republican House members about legislation that would fast-track natural gas drilling in the state.
