Meanwhile, a Senate committee discussed a proposal to add kratom, a medicinal herb that works similar to opioids, to the list of controlled substances in North Carolina. Some lawmakers said kratom relieves their chronic pain, and the committee is expected to hear more about the bill next week.
Braeburn Pharmaceuticals said it would proceed with plans for an expansion in Durham, despite its concerns over House Bill 2, while renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman said he was canceling his concert with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra to protest the law.
