Tuesday Wrap: Budget work picking up
House Speaker Tim Moore says appropriations subcommittees will hold extensive meetings over the next several days, and the chairs of the subcommittees and the House Appropriations Committee will hammer out details over the weekend before the $21.5 billion spending plan is rolled out for debate and approval next week.
Posted — UpdatedBefore the budget work, Moore said, the House plans to take up a revised gun bill on Wednesday. The measure drew extensive opposition last week, and the updated proposal was being pushed through the chamber in less than 24 hours after being publicly unveiled late Tuesday.
In the Senate, a committee on Tuesday passed a Farm Bill that would expand deer farming in the state. Hunting advocates oppose the provision, fearing an outbreak of a disease that has decimated deer populations in other states.
A separate Senate panel approved a measure that would prohibit anyone younger than 18 from using a tanning bed. The proposal has passed the House twice but has previously failed to gain any traction in the Senate.
Meanwhile, Gov. Pat McCrory told the North Carolina Chamber that he expects lawmakers to act on economic incentives in the coming weeks. Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger agreed that some action needs to be taken, and he also pushed for more tax reform and Medicaid reform.
