RALEIGH, N.C. — Full disclosure: I had never ordered a whiskey cocktail at a bar until I visited Dram & Draught.

I had a bad experience with whiskey in college and hadn’t tried it since, but I nervously walked in to Dram & Draught’s “Winter Cocktail Menu Premiere Party” hoping they would have something on the menu I felt safe trying. They did!

My first drink was called "The Well Traveled Guest,” and it was a refreshing spin on the classic vodka/cranberry -- it was delicious and pink!

As I finished my first cocktail, co-owner Kevin Barrett approached me and asked why I had chosen a vodka cocktail over a whiskey drink. When I explained my cringe-worthy adolescent experience, he offered to reintroduce me to whiskey by making my next drink himself.

Kevin made a “Canadian Tuxedo,” which was concocted with whiskey, maple syrup, lemon and walnut bitters and topped off with an orange wedge. The cocktail was refreshing and not overwhelming -- not at all like I had anticipated. I got a taste of all of the flavors and, overall, was very impressed with the drink.

I will definitely be trying more whiskey drinks in the future. Consider me re-introduced.

The drinks at Dram & Draught were amazing and the environment was super chill. The bar was pretty busy when I went, but I felt comfortable there.

It’s a great space in a growing downtown neighborhood.
