SELMA, N.C. — A driver whose tanker truck loaded with ethanol overturned Tuesday in Selma has been charged with speeding, authorities said Wednesday.

The wreck closed roads in an area between U.S. Highway 301 and Interstate 95 for hours Tuesday. Johnston County authorities also evacuated several businesses at the intersection of U.S. Highway 70 and Ricks Road.

The tanker was carrying 8,000 gallons of ethanol, but only a small amount leaked out.

Driver Shaun Eugene Price, 49, of Smithfield, was charged with driving at a speed to endanger persons or property. Authorities said he was trying to make a right turn onto U.S. 70 from Ricks Road but was going too fast, causing the tanker to flip.

Price was treated at Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield and released.
