Truck wreck blocks southbound I-85 in Vance

Posted August 29, 2008

— A tractor-trailer wreck has blocked southbound Interstate 85 near the Vance-Granville county line since the early hours of Friday.

Ralph Williams, 60, of Autryville, lost control of his 18-wheeler in a construction zone at mile marker 209, between Henderson and Oxford, around 1 a.m., state troopers said. The tractor-trailer ran off the right side of the road, hit the end of a guardrail and came to a stop in woods along the highway.

Troopers said Williams was safely out of the tractor-trailer when they arrived, but he was limping. He was transported to Granville Medical Center.

Williams was cited for reckless driving.

Southbound vehicles were being diverted onto N.C. Highway 158 for about three miles.

Crews pulled the tractor-trailer out of the woods around 6:30 a.m. Troopers said they are concerned that some trees hit by the tractor-trailer could fall over.

No complaints on the road construction, just thrilled it's being done. Everyone needs to slow down thru the construction zone until they are finished. Used to be a punishing ride from VA to Henderson. We can all thank Mark Roberts for running his survey about the worst road or highway in the area. This stretch of I85 won the contest and finally got some attention from the powers that be. It would shake your fillings out before.

This is a very dangerous stretch. I too traveled this section this time last weekend on my way to Richmond. I'm glad they are widening it.

I also travel this stretch of 85 myself. I think it is great that they are re-doing the road. Some of the work could definately be a little more orgainzed but its good that they are working on it. If people would slow down there would not be as many accidents. It is construction and you have to be a little slower. People also need to give the truckers more space and respect.

I travel everyday on this stretch of 85. They have been working on this for several months. It is very dangerous how they have the road set up, I am only surprised this is the first time there has been an accident there that closed the road.

If we were part of Wake county at least one side of the road would be done.
