— A tractor-trailer was stuck under a railroad overpass at North Roxboro and Pettigrew streets in Durham Friday morning.

ncmickey - "There ARE lights that flash when an oversized truck approches. There ARE plenty of signs!"

Some think the flashing lights are on all the time, not just when an over-sized vehicle approaches.

As for the signs, I bet far fewer read street signs than one would think.

A bright yellow painted 2x12 hung over the nearest intersection about 2" shorter than the underpass that would gently hit the top of the over-sized vehicle before they plunge down the street wouldn't be that expensive.

Couldn't cost that much and would certainly be cheaper than fixing the bridge, though if I'm correct - if it's a RR bridge, the RR pays for it, if it's a city bridge, the city does.

Many businesses with driver-thrus have boards hanging from chains an inch or two below the actual height of the clearance so drivers will hit those which will tell them they're too tall for the opening.

Wonder why cities don't install those half a block or so away from underpasses like this. Would be far cheaper than repairing bridges.

There are at least four 11'8" bridges in Durham.

11foot8.com is funny to watch, but it's at a different location than this truck. That cam watches the railroad trestle on Gregson St. at Peabody St., near Brightleaf Square. This truck is/was stuck under the old bridge on Roxboro St. just as it crosses Pettigrew St. heading towards the downtown loop.

That said, I'm amazed that more trucks don't get stuck under that bridge. Maybe the uphill stretch of Roxboro immediately after the underpass makes it look low enough that most trucks avoid it.

"There is a webcam set up to watch this bridge "

www.11foot8.com - it's a hoot. 100% clean and family friendly page...unlike the language I suspect one would hear in the trucks...

There ARE lights that flash when an oversized truck approches. There ARE plenty of signs! The railroad even put up a steel girder a few feet in front of the bridge to stop trucks from damaging the bridge when they hit.
What else do you want the DOT to do??
    Its the drivers fault 100%
