KENLY, N.C. — A tractor-trailer hauling 38,000 pounds of strawberries crashed early Wednesday morning off the side of Interstate 95 near Kenly.

The truck, heading from Florida to Massachusetts, drove off the northbound lanes of the highway around 4 a.m., according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The truck rolled down a muddy embankment and stopped at the tree line.

Troopers said the truck was heavily damaged but the driver was not injured.

The driver told troopers he was forced off the road by another vehicle.

The highway was narrowed to one lane as crews worked to pull the truck back up the hill.

Despite the crash, the truck's refrigeration system was still operating, keeping the strawberries fresh, troopers said.

Removing the tractor-trailer is expected to take several hours.
