Troopers: Driver in noodle truck crash was fatigued

Driver fatigue contributed to a wreck Wednesday that shut down Interstate 95 in Nash County for hours and left boxes of ramen noodles strewn across the road, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Thursday.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Driver fatigue contributed to a wreck Wednesday that shut down Interstate 95 in Nash County for hours and left boxes of ramen noodles strewn across the road, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said Thursday.

Troopers said the driver, Albert Larry Scholting, 60, of St. Petersburg, Fla., was charged with reckless driving in the pre-dawn crash near exit 145 north of Rocky Mount.

Scholting was southbound when he drove off the right side of the highway and struck a guardrail about 4 a.m. After the truck hit the guardrail, it struck a bridge overpass and came to rest against the bridge abutment, troopers said.

The impact of the crash ripped open the trailer, and the noodle packages spilled.

Scholting was not injured, but the southbound lanes remained closed until 3:30 p.m. while crews removed the wreckage.
