Trooper involved in fatal shooting moves before returning to duty
A state trooper shot and killed a suspected drunken driver who pulled out a handgun during a traffic stop in Halifax County Friday night, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Trooper Matt W. Pitman stopped the driver of a 2005 Dodge pickup truck for suspected impaired driving on U.S. Highway 158 west of Roanoke Rapids on June 29.
Pitman ordered the driver, James Russell Moore, 64, out of the car and on the ground when he realized Moore had a gun in his pocket. Authorities said Moore ignored repeated orders from Pitman and pointed his loaded gun at the trooper, prompting Pitman to shoot him.
Pitman was placed on administrative duty while the shooting was investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.
Highway Patrol spokesman First Sgt. Jeff Gordon said Pitman requested a transfer to Madison County, and he recently returned to active duty.
