WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A state Highway Patrol trooper died Tuesday after undergoing a surgery for an injury he suffered more than two years ago, authorities said.

Trooper Kyle P. Barber, 46, died at Wake Forest University Hospital, becoming the 61st trooper to die in the line of duty since the formation of the Highway Patrol in 1929.

On Jan 20, 2007, Barber was assisting another trooper that had stopped an all-terrain vehicle on a rural road in Wilkes County. The ATV rolled, pinning Barber against his patrol car.

He suffered major injuries to his lower legs and has undergone 10 surgeries and other medical treatments since then, authorities said.

Barber joined the Highway Patrol in May 1985. He is survived by his wife and three children.
