RALEIGH, N.C. — Winter temperatures arrived a few days after the season started last week, but WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said they will stick around for a while.

"The cold has arrived, and it's going to be here for quite some time," Maze said Monday. "It's a long stretch of cold, and below-normal temperatures are expected into the new year."

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-40s, but highs drop to the mid- to upper 30s later in the week, with overnight lows in the 20s.

Earlier predictions of snow or a wintry mix of precipitation late Thursday and into Friday might not come to pass, Maze said. Recent computer models have backed off that forecast, he said, although things could change in the coming days.

The cold weather will continue through the weekend and into next week, making New Year's celebrations a bit nippy, he said.

"Temperatures as the acorn falls will be in upper 20s. So, if you're heading to downtown Raleigh (for) First Night, dress accordingly," he said.
