Triangle restaurants raise awareness, funds during Dine4Autism

On April 29, restaurants across the Triangle will donate up to 15 percent of their sales to help local individuals with autism and their families.

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Out and About crew loves to dine out, especially when it benefits a great cause.

On Tuesday (April 29), participating restaurants across the Triangle will be donating up to 15 percent of their total day's sales to support local people with autism and their families.

Restaurants participating in Dine4Autism include Lilly's Pizza in Raleigh and Durham, Rise in Durham and Tyler's Taproom in Raleigh, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, Durham and Apex.

All proceeds will go to fund local volunteer chapters in their mission to support families dealing with autism. Insurance coverage for autism is not required in North Carolina and thousands of families are on waiting lists for services, according to the Autism Society of North Carolina.

ASNC's chapters provide informational meetings and social events. They also help to fund scholarships to ASNC's Camp Royall in Pittsboro. This summer camp provides recreational activities for more than 1,000 individuals with autism.

April has been named Autism Awareness Month.

"With one in 68 children in North Carolina diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum, it is rare to find a family that has not been touched in some way by autism” said Leslie Welch, leader of the Wake ASNC Chapter.
