RALEIGH, N.C. — First, some sad news. Palsie's Popcorn and Sweets in north Raleigh has closed its doors. A handwritten sign posted on their door reads: "Dear friends, It's been fun. Thanks for all your business! We'll miss you. Kindly, Palsie's Crew." I loved this place! They sold so many flavors of popcorn, homemade fudge and even New Orleans' style shaved ice. No word on what will become of the space.
This next item actually came from a viewer tip. Chet wrote in to ask us why the Barking Cow, located at the corner of Lake Boone Trail and Wycliff Road in Raleigh, closed recently. We called the owner, who told us that they have decided to move on to other ventures. Their other restaurants - Leesville Tap Room, MacGregor Draft House and Saw Mill Tap Room - remain open. The Barking Cow location has been bought by the owner of the Village Deli, who plans to use it as a extension of that business, the Barking Cow folks said.
Oak City Coffee Roasters are leasing a space in downtown Raleigh. They hope to open an official shop. Currently, you can get their coffee at certain other retail locations and the Midtown and Downtown Raleigh farmers markets.
Firewurst opened its Brier Creek location this week, according to their Facebook page. They serve flame-grilled sausages and hot dogs. They have another location in Cary.
Vietnamese restaurant Pho Super 9 opened recently in the Plantation Point Shopping Center near the Triangle Town Center Mall. According to their Facebook page, they opened last week.
The Triangle Business Journal is reporting that Cameron's art and gift shop will be relocating from the University Mall in Chapel Hill to downtown Carrboro. They will be moving into the new 300 East Main building later this year. Also moving there, Charlotte-based Hickory Tavern, a restaurant and sports bar with 14 locations across the state, and the East Main Meatball Company. East Main is from Ken Yowell, co-owner of Calavera Empanadas and Tequila Bar. TBJ is also reporting that Yowell plans to open another place in Carrboro similar to Calavera.
Steel String Craft Brewery will officially open its doors in Carrboro on May 10 with a grand opening celebration, but you can check them through May 1 during their soft opening. They will be operating with limited hours 5-10 p.m.
Food truck fans, we have two new trucks you can actually check out this Friday during a special Flash Mob Rodeo at Rebus Works. D Burritos and Baton Rouge Cuisine will be making their rodeo debuts alongside old favorites Captain Poncho's and Hibachi Xpress. We haven't seen much info on D Burritos, but Baton Rouge Cuisine has a website and was started by Baton Rouge native and former Harlem Globetrotter Anthony Greenup. It serves traditional Louisiana cuisine. (Needless to say, this New Orleans native is excited to check it out!) The pop up rodeo is from 6-9 p.m.
UPDATE: Joel Lane's Public House closed its doors for the last time on Friday, April 26.
