RALEIGH, N.C. — A lot of news packed into this week's post so let's get right to it!
Straw Valley Food and Drink and its restaurant The Black House have opened off of 15-501 between Durham and Chapel Hill. The creation of Chef Adam Rose and Master Sommelier Fred Dex, this sprawling indoor and outdoor concept boasts a cafe, bar and beer garden, in addition to a fine dining restaurant. The cafe operates every day and The Black House has hours Wednesday through Saturday nights.
Carrboro Coffee Roasters has opened up a pop-up coffee bar at Golden Belt in downtown Durham. You can get brewed coffee, espresso drinks and non-caffeinated drinks there from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to a press release, the coffee bar will also be used for training and outreach.
Double Barley Brewing in Smithfield is now serving food. Their taproom opened last year, but they just opened their kitchen this week.
Also opened this week:
  • Person Street Neighborhood Bar has had to delay its opening, according to their Facebook page. This private bar (you need to apply for membership) plans to be open everyday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • Old Chicago Pizza and Taproom opened Monday on West Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, the Triangle Business Journal reports. More than 100 different beers will be available there.
  • Smashburger opened its first Triangle location in Durham Wednesday. Located off of Erwin Road, this franchise is known for their burgers, chicken and milkshakes.
  • Caribbean Royale Ice Cream has opened in Clayton, according to the News and Observer. They sell fruit-flavored ice creams like coconut, mango, grapenut and banana.
  • A new Chinese, Thai and Malaysian restaurant has opened in the Wilders Grove Shopping Area on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh, according to Triangle Food Guy. Red Pepper Asian Restaurant is from the former owners of Fortune Kitchen.
Coming soon:
Another barbecue restaurant is coming to the area. Ohio-based City Barbeque will be opening in Cary on April 12 in the old Cinelli's Restorante building on Kildaire Farm Road. It is the chain's first North Carolina location. The grand opening event starts at 11 a.m. and will include samples of their smoked meats and local entertainment.
Starting in April, Triangle Town Center in north Raleigh will be getting a little sweeter. Sweet Traditions by LeAne, a popular cupcake food truck, will be operating a kiosk right outside the food court every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Tasty 8's Gourmet Hot Dog Co. is coming to downtown Raleigh. They will be occupying the former home of Spize Cafe, which closed earlier this year. According to their Facebook page, they are hoping to open by early May.
Another brewery is on the way! Draft Line Brewing is hoping to open its brewery and taproom on Broad Street in Fuquay-Varina in May.
There is another neighborhood brewery and taproom in the works - this time in north Raleigh. The new venture - Neuse River Brewing Company - is looking for a location between north Raleigh and Creedmoor, according to the Triangle Business Journal. They are reportedly interested in serving up Belgian ales.
A little lagniappe for ya:
White Street Brewing is moving its production from Wake Forest to Youngsville, the Triangle Business Journal reports. The brewery will maintain its taproom in downtown Wake Forest. The production move, which is expected to happen by August, will give the brewery more space to expand and grow from their current 10-barrel system to a 30-barrel system. More production means more jobs. Representatives told TBJ that they will be hiring five to 10 more employees.
In honor of its one-year anniversary, Coglin's Raleigh located on Fayetteville Street downtown got a little work done. The 1980s and 1990s- themed bar has added new art, memorabilia and a new way to enjoy their cocktails; They are filling a full-sized wearable, playable guitar with 22 ounces of your favorite drink. Their VIP lounge has gotten a full "Top Gun" makeover with Rubik's Cube-inspired cocktail tables and new leather lounge furniture. It now dubbed "The Danger Zone." They even have tandem "Wingman" shots.
Reminder: Bull McCabe's in Durham will close March 19  to expand its dining area and install a new exhaust hood in the kitchen, owners said. The closure will last 10 days. After the upgrades, they will have 100 more seats under a new covered and heated deck and new restrooms. With warmer temperatures coming, it is also good to note that they will have the beer garden this summer.
