Trial Expected to Begin Monday for Durham Murder Suspect

DURHAM, N.C. — Opening statements are set for Monday in the trial of a man accused of killing a Wilmington teen.
A Durham jury sentenced Todd Boggess to death a decade ago for the slaying of 16-year-old Danny Pence. However, the Supreme Court gave Boggess a new trial because of a technicality.
Pence, 16, was found beaten to death in a wooded area of northern Durham County in 1995. Investigators believe Boggess and Melanie Gray kidnapped Pence from Wilmington, brought him to Durham and killed him before stealing his car.
Gray, who was 14 years old at the time, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was set free in 2005.
Prosecutors have announced that they are not seeking the death penalty. Testimony is expected to last a week.
