— Jury selection begins Monday in the trial of a Raeford man charged with murder for hitting another man with his SUV in 2008.

Stanton Mark Moretti Jr., 45, told police he was chasing the man who tried to rob his wife.

Moretti said his wife, Anna, was standing outside a pizzeria on Yadkin Road in Fayetteville when a man approached her and threatened her with a knife. Anna Moretti yelled for her husband, who said he responded by firing two warning shots, then chasing the alleged attacker in his GMC Yukon.

Moretti hit Aaron Lazarus McLeod, then 28, three times as McLeod ran down Horseshoe Road.

In a pre-trial interview, Moretti said he heard loud noises that he thought were gunshots and ducked, hitting McLeod.

Moretti is charged with first-degree murder and faces life in prison or the death penalty if he is convicted.

I bet money the Guy who held a knife to this guys wife had a record a mile long,So i ask why is this being put on trial for protecting his wife, Who has the rights anymore its sure not the victims ... pat7

While I don't disagree with the guy having a long history of crime, your argument doesn't hold a drop of water unfortunately. He's not protecting his wife after he started chasing the guy. The danger to the wife was over, no protection at that point. However I do like what you said. If I'm in that position??? Pedal to the metal no doubt about it.

The least you can do when NOT posting our comments is give a reason as to why...2 of my comments were not posted. Is this gonna be a site for just those who agree that the man was in his right to kill another? Or..are we all gonna be able to state how we feel?

"Who has the rights anymore its sure not the victims ..."

The accused has rights. it is only because he ovestepped his rights that he is in trouble.

This is why this country is so screwed up right now.....a man tries to rob your wife with a knife.....you shoot him and you go on trial for murder. I am behind this guy all the way. What if this criminal had killed the wife and gotten away......then killed again.......wake up people in Fayettville.....if you want your town to turn into another Durham which I understand it is close to becoming then keep it up......it is time to take care of the criminals now....keep down the prison costs and reduce the number of crimes.....a little .45cal justice can go a long way.

killed while trying to rob someone. sounds like an occupational hazard to me.

So I wonder why did he shoot two warning shots instead of shooting at the assailant... Perhaps, the accused didn't want to risk hitting his wife... too great a distance... too dark... not sure of what was behind the assailant in case he missed? If he testifies, maybe he'll reveal why.
