Transportation board cedes project authority to DOT secretary

Posted February 5, 2009

— The North Carolina Board of Transportation has officially handed over its power to approve construction projects to Department of Transportation Secretary Gene Conti.

Last month, Gov. Bev Perdue issued an executive order giving the state transportation secretary sole authority to approve road construction projects and taking that authority from the board.

Conti will now decide on more than $18 million worth of contracts in Alamance, Henderson, Lenoir, Lincoln, McDowell, Orange, Randolph and Surry counties.

A permanent protocol for larger projects is still being developed.

"Yay! Now instead of having to bribe 18+ people, you only have to go to one!"

Assuming that's true, it's still a good thing. Now you don't have to pay for pet projects in potentially 18 areas, just one.

And they complained about Tippett having too much power on choosing projects. Now more power in the hands of one person? Sounds questionable.

Sounds like they can disband the board.
